The number one premise of cat psychology is this: The cat truly believes that he is the Master of the Universe. Moreover, he believes that you share this belief, and if you doubt it for a second, you forever lose that cat's respect.
They march with their tails erect, showing you that all is well in their world. You came when they called. The tail upright and steady means they are well satisfied and secure. You are doing what they expect and desire.
